Environmentalist urges N’Assembly to investigate NOSDRA over Eteo oil spill

The National Assembly has been charged to urgently investigate the continuous silence of the National Oil Spill and Response Agency (NOSDRA) two months after a crude oil spill occurred in Eteo Community, in Eleme Council of Rivers State.

The Guardian gathered that NOSDRA is yet to carry out a joint investigation on the spill, which occurred on June 18, after an earlier spill in Aleto Eleme, on June 13, 2023.

Consequently, findings show that the people have continued to suffer acute hunger and lack of access to drinking water as the spill has continued to leak and flow on farmlands and water sources, preventing them from enjoying their sources of livelihood.

An environmentalist and Executive Director, Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, (YEAC-Nigeria), Fynface Dunamene Fynface, said the implications of NOSDRA’s neglect on the spill will give oil companies the impetus to keep polluting the environment, knowing that nothing would happen.

He alleged that it is either that the agency has been bribed by the polluters or deliberately failing to implement regulations and environmental laws as if there is no government to call them to order.
This is as some residents are allegedly picking and eating dead fishes from the fuel dump explosion, which occurred last week in Okrika Council of Rivers State.
