Acting Country Director, World Bank, Taimur Samad, has said the bank will support the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and urban renewal in Yobe State.
According to him, the support was to complete the state government’s Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery (RRR) process in the insurgency-affected communities.
Unveiling the RRR support, yesterday, in Damaturu, Samad disclosed: “The rehabilitation and recovery processes of the bank are to restore the destroyed means of livelihood in the state.”
Samad, who doubles as the Operations Manager of the bank, assured Governor Mai Mala Buni of continued support in the resettlement of IDPs and development of major conflict affected towns of Potiskum, Gashua and Damaturu, with a population of about a million.
The Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) Team Lead, Fuad Malkawi, said the World Bank and MCRP interventions would scale up synergy in improving the living conditions of the people affected by the over a decade conflict.
Buni, excited over the support, noted the need to enhance agricultural and livestock production to create job opportunities and achieve food security in the state.
He, therefore, charged international development partners to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks that retard the speedy support of communities in humanitarian crises areas.
Bureaucracy, according to him, slows down the speed of reaching out to the affected communities. The governor urged development partners to consider relaxing bureaucracy to achieve maximum results in the resettlement of IDPs in communities with livelihoods.
He added: “Our youths are ready to go into commercial agriculture for industrial use and exports to achieve economic development.” On the crops and livestock to be produced, he said: “We are targeting food crops and sesame seeds production.
“The state government is determined to provide the required inputs, so that agriculture becomes attractive, productive and profitable among the farmers.”
