10 injured in Third Mainland Bridge crash

Accident caution sign

…train collision averted in Lagos

Ten people were injured in a chain-reaction crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday, while emergency responders separately prevented a possible train collision after a commercial bus broke down on a railway track at Ilupeju Bypass.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the bridge accident began when a commercial bus stopped to fix a faulty tyre, only for another bus to crash into it.

A trailer subsequently rammed into the second bus before its driver fled the scene, worsening the incident.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, administered first aid to the injured passengers and transported them to a hospital for further treatment.

The agency also confirmed that the affected section of the bridge was cleared, allowing traffic to resume.

In a separate incident at Ilupeju Bypass, emergency officials removed a broken-down commercial bus that had become stranded on a railway track, averting a potential collision with a train.

The bus was towed off the track using a light tow truck deployed by the emergency response team.

Following the incidents, LASEMA urged motorists to maintain their vehicles regularly and avoid carrying out repairs on busy highways and bridges, warning that such situations could expose road users to serious danger.

The agency also reminded residents that emergency assistance is available through the Lagos emergency numbers, 767 and 112.
