A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a shooting at a luxury shopping centre in the centre of Bangkok, Thailand

Authorities initially said three people were killed at the Siam Paragon mall, but a later update said two people had died. The two pwolw who died were Chinese and Burmese.

Five other people have been injured, Thai police say, with several in serious condition. One foreigner is among the injured, the Reuters news agency reports
Police chief, Torsak Sukvimol, praised the security guards at the Siam Paragon mall for taking control of the situation quickly.

He said the 14-year-old suspect showed no signs of resistance when surrendering, adding that the prime minister has visited the scene.

Shir Yahav, a tourist from Israel, says she saw people running without understanding why, before hearing gunfire.

She says she was among a group who hid in a shop for “one and a half hour to two hours’ and blocked the door”.

According to Thai Newspaper, the shooting started at about 16:20 local time (09:20 GMT) at the shopping centre in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan district.
A special operations police unit was deployed, managing to corner the gunman at about 17:10, the Bangkok Post says.

The attacker then surrendered, laying down his weapon, the newspaper adds.
Meanwhile, the Thai Post says the suspect wore a dark shirt, khaki camouflage trousers, gloves, a hat, and black boots.

The Thai prime minister has sent his “deepest condolences” to the families of those who have died or been injured. Posting on X, Srettha Thavisin wrote “Police officers quickly entered the area.”
He says he received a police report confirming that the suspect was arrested.
“But I still want to ask about security,” he adds, “and facilitating people to return home safely as well.”

The Bangkok mall where today’s shooting happened has expressed its “deepest condolences” following the incident.

“As soon as the incident occurred, the police and Siam Paragon’s security team immediately evacuated customers and employees from the building, prioritising the safety of all customers, employees, and tenants,” a statement from the mall says.

The luxury shopping centre also offers its “sincerest gratitude” to the police, volunteers, and its own security team for their “dedicated efforts in bringing the situation under control.”

“We also appreciate all the support from everyone during the incident and will continue to provide updates on any further developments,” it says.
