Abia commences probe into container accident

The Abia State government, yesterday, announced a thorough investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of Tuesday’s container accident at the Waterside Bridge, Ogbor Hill Aba. 
 
Chief of Staff to Abia State governor, Dr Caleb Ajagba, disclosed this after visiting the victims in the hospitals at Aba. 
 
The hospitals included New Era Hospital, Impact Hospital, NISSI Hospital, Blessed Haven Hospital, GMP, Seventh Day Adventist Hospital and Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH).
  
He expressed joy that the 11 victims were responding to treatments and prayed for their early discharge.
  
Ajaba, who asked for proper documentation for follow up, said: “What happened was quite unfortunate, necessary investigations will be carried out. We want to find out both the immediate and remote cause of the accident”. 
  
He added that measures would be put in place to forestall future occurrence, including restricting the movement of heavy-duty trucks to the night.
 
Ajagba assured the victims that the state government would take charge of their medical bills and ensure they get the best medical care, while those that require surgery and specialist care would be attended to at the appropriate hospitals.  
  
Meanwhile, medical directors of some of the hospitals, namely; Prof. John Chikezie of ABSUTH, Dr Patrick Okolo of New Era Hospital, Dr Emenike Chidi of Impact Hospital, commended the visit, stressing that the victims were in stable conditions.
