
The Deputy- Director, Agency for Mass Education, Alausa, Lagos, Mrs. Ruth Fatunji Sonayan, has urged parents and schools in the state to continue to emphasise reason for Christian celebration, rather than emphasizing the merriment that is often associated with the festival.

She said the essence of the festival and all the activities associated with it should be a reminder of the birth and eventual death of Jesus.
She said: “Christmas should not be about eating and drinking only. It must be a reminder of the essence and importance of the birth and death of our Lord Jesus, which speaks volumes of his love to humanity.”
Sonayan, who was the special guest at the 2023 Christmas carol service of Christ College, The Royal Acres, Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, also disclosed that the Agency was making efforts to bring the number of out-of-school children in the state to the barest minimum.
She said one of the key messages of Christmas is love and compassion. “People should begin to appreciate the message of Jesus, which is love, compassion and sacrifice and the need to teach our children to exhibit same to others”. She further commended the Chairman of the Christ College, Pastor S. O. Olatunji, management and the entire teachers of the college.
for modelling the students in accordance to the exemplary teaching of Jesus. She said: “The school is doing greatly in modeling the students after the image of our Lord Jesus. I can see that in their conduct and comportment. This is good for our society and I urged other schools in the state to imbibe the virtues”.
The Lagos state mass education boss also disclosed that the agency has 680 centers across the state to cater for dropped out school age children across the five divisions of the state.
