Cynthia Chisomeje Azuatalam of Cyberspace Limited has underscored the urgent need for a global transition to green energy.
In her address titled “A Moral Imperative for Our Times,” Azuatalam emphasised that adopting renewable energy sources is crucial in confronting the existential threat of climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for upcoming generations.
Azuatalam highlighted that the environmental challenges face today necessitate a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power.
“Embracing green energy and sustainability is not merely a matter of choice; it is a moral obligation we owe to future generations and the delicate ecosystems that sustain life on earth,” she stated.
Azuatalam pointed out that the combustion of these fuels releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming and destabilising the planet’s climate systems.
She said the visible consequences, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and disrupted ecosystems, underscore the urgent need for change.
In stark contrast, Azuatalam noted that green energy technologies offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative, adding that they harness natural forces without depleting resources or polluting the environment.
Investing in renewable energy infrastructure, she argued, can reduce our carbon footprint, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and drive innovation in the green economy.
Azuatalam also stressed that the transition to green energy is more than just a practical necessity, but signifies a fundamental shift in societal values.
However, Azuatalam acknowledged the challenges in making this transition, citing the entrenched interests of the fossil fuel industry and political inertia.
Despite these obstacles, she urged collective action and international cooperation, emphasizing that climate change impacts are felt globally and indiscriminately.
According to Azuatalam, overcoming these hurdles requires holding leaders accountable, demanding ambitious climate policies, and supporting initiatives that promote renewable energy.
This includes significant investments in renewable energy infrastructure, research and development, and fostering a culture of sustainability throughout society.
Azuatalam’s powerful message calls on individuals, communities, and nations to rise above the challenges and create a sustainable and equitable future powered by renewable energy.
