Toke Makinwa Opens Up About Skin Bleaching Regrets
Popular Nigerian on-air personality (OAP) and social media influencer, Toke Makinwa, has revealed she regrets ever bleaching her skin.
In a conversation on X, the influencer revealed her regrets about bleaching her skin during a question-and-answer session with her fans and followers.
When asked about potential regrets, Toke Makinwa initially declared, “Nothing. Regret is so exhausting!!!” However, she then confessed, “Wait, maybe bleaching my skin, it was the dumbest thing ever.”
In her book, Becoming, Makinwa admitted to bleaching her skin due to her ex-husband Maje’s infidelity with someone of lighter complexion. To win his attention and prevent his infidelity, she chose to modify her skin to resemble the other woman.

Regrettably, her actions didn’t yield the intended result, as they eventually divorced and went their separate ways.
The tweet also sheds light on Toke Makinwa’s acknowledgment of privilege. She concluded by expressing her gratitude for “good genes and money”, suggesting that her access to “resources” played a role in overcoming the effects of skin bleaching.
Skin bleaching is the use of products to lighten dark areas of the skin or achieve an overall lighter complexion. These products include bleaching creams, soaps, and pills, as well as professional treatments like chemical peels and laser therapy.
Some of the effects of skin bleaching include light sensitivity, steroid acne, dermatitis, and extreme discoloration of the skin.
