Fire destroys goods worth millions of naira in Lagos

Scene of the incident
A fire gutted an eight-bedroom bungalow in Lagos in the early hours of yesterday, destroying household goods worth several millions of naira.

The fire took place at N0 21, Shibukola Street, Idimu area of the state.

Though the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, sources said no life was lost, and that rescue workers were able to bring the situation under control.

Confirming the development, Nosa Okunbor, the Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said rescue workers were able to salvage goods at the scene.

“In response to distress calls received by LASEMA through the 767/112 toll-free emergency lines at about 1:45 a.m., the agency activated its Dolphin Response Team from the Igando base.

“Upon arrival at the scene, responders discovered an eight-room bungalow engulfed in flames at the aforementioned address.

“Further investigations revealed that the fire started from the roof parts of the last room before spreading quickly to the rest of the building.

“No casualties or injuries were recorded. Though the affected building was fully occupied as of the time of the fire incident, all the occupants escaped unhurt,” he said.

Okunbor said safety measures were activated by all members of the multi-agency response teams to safeguard responders.

He said the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) coordinated the operation in collaboration with the Lagos fire and rescue officials.

He added: “A significant quantity of household properties, equally worth millions of naira, was salvaged through the efforts of occupants and the response teams during the operation.

“Collaborative efforts of responders contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

“In attendance were Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) and the Nigerian Police Force.”
