Expert provides insight into transforming Nigeria’s manufacturing supply chain

Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, a crucial driver of economic growth, faces significant supply chain challenges that hinder its full potential.

Mr. Ayodeji Ayeni, a US-based supply chain professional, has emphasized the need to assess Nigeria’s current supply chain infrastructure thoroughly. Citing the need for optimizing transportation, warehousing, and distribution systems to streamline the flow of raw materials and finished products, for example,

Ayeni decried the huge naira losses from bottlenecks and inefficiencies currently affecting the diverse Nigerian manufacturing sector, acknowledging the need for robust end-to-end supply chain network design and the establishment of localized manufacturing hubs near key markets or raw material sources which can significantly reduce transportation costs and improve responsiveness to market demands.

Moreover, he stressed the need for Value stream mapping, a crucial approach to identifying inefficiencies within the manufacturing process. Mr. Ayeni suggests implementing lean manufacturing principles, such as Just-In-Time (JIT) and Total Quality Management (TQM), to eliminate waste, reduce lead times, and enhance product quality. These strategies are essential for transforming Nigeria’s manufacturing processes into more efficient and competitive operations. In today’s data-centric world, Mr. Ayeni further disclosed that utilizing supply chain analytics is vital for informed decision-making.

He highlights the importance of advanced analytics and data visualization techniques to improve demand forecasting and inventory management. He said, “By accurately predicting market demand and optimizing stock levels, manufacturers can reduce holding costs and mitigate the risks of stockouts or overproduction.”

Another area of improvement Mr. Ayeni is passionate about is the digitization of supply chain processes. Implementing Industry 4.0 technologies like IoT, AI, and robotics can automate and streamline manufacturing operations. He further provided insights through his current work with a Silicon Valley company in the United States, where he served as a Senior Cloud Supply Chain Analyst while developing an effective management process for a $30 million consigned hardware inventory. As a supply chain expert, he disclosed how his expertise in creating robust inventory management systems that enhance operational efficiency and reduce the risks associated with consigned inventory has provided a clear framework for managing significant hardware assets, ensuring that they are accounted for and utilized optimally within the organization.

He believes that developing a digitization roadmap that integrates ERP systems and real-time data analytics in most Nigerian manufacturing and production companies will further enhance supply chain visibility and control. The expert suggests implementing advanced warehouse management systems (WMS) and IT asset management solutions to effectively track and manage machinery and equipment. He believes this will reduce downtime and maintenance costs and ensure optimal use of resources, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

Cost optimization is essential for maintaining competitiveness. He recommends analyzing and reducing costs across the supply chain, from procurement to distribution. He opined, “Companies should implement effective budget planning and financial control measures to ensure efficient resource allocation and support strategic manufacturing initiatives. It is also pertinent to foster strong collaboration with suppliers, logistics providers, and other stakeholders, which is vital for a seamless supply chain.” The expert suggests public-private partnerships to address infrastructure challenges and regulatory issues. This collaborative approach will drive the development of a more efficient and resilient manufacturing supply chain.

With a strategic focus on network design, process optimization, data analytics, automation, sustainability, and collaboration, Ayeni’s recommendations provide a comprehensive blueprint for transforming Nigeria’s manufacturing supply chain. By leveraging these insights, he is confident that Nigeria can enhance its manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and drive sustainable economic growth.
