A lecturer at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr Kunle Adeyemi, has blamed past governments for the deplorable education system.
To address the rot, Adeyemi advised the Federal Government to appoint experts who’ll steer the ship of the sector for a positive turnaround.
Adeyemi, a former Dean of School of Art, Design, and Printing, disclosed this to journalists ahead of his forthcoming exhibition themed: ‘Paintograph and Paintocast Explored.’
The expert, who uses art to portray global issues, decried cases of illegal admissions and certificate racketeering in the country’s tertiary institutions, saying some students cut corners to obtain their results without following due process.
Citing the appointment of seasoned educationist, Prof. Babatunde Fafunwa, by the former military Head of State, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) the former dean urged the government to appoint qualified persons into leadership positions.
Adeyemi, who also emphasised the need for skills development, harped on the need to balance practicals with theory in the university system.
He said: “Practical learning allows students to learn from mistakes and gain experiences. It is necessary to get into the field while learning the theoretical aspects, so they will be thoroughly refined problem solvers wherever they find themselves.”
