D’Tigress becomes first African team in FIBA Top 10
Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have made history by becoming the first African team, male or female, to break into the top 10 of the FIBA world rankings.
According to the latest rankings released on Thursday by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the six-time AfroBasket champions climbed four spots to secure the 8th position globally.
D’Tigress’ remarkable rise in the rankings follows their impressive performance at the Paris Olympics, solidifying their status as one of the world’s elite teams.
Despite being drawn in a tough group that had hosts France, Australia and Canada, D’Tigress progressed into the quarter-finals.
The coach Rena Wakama-led side opened their campaign with a shock 75 – 62 win against Australia but lost to France by 75 – 54.
They bounced back from the defeat to France with a remarkable win against Canada, securing a 79 – 70 point win.

After the end of the group stage, D’Tigress finished third behind France and Australia and advanced to the quarter-finals.
However, despite a spirited effort their campaign came to an end following a 88-74 loss to USA, who went on to win the gold medal.
Also, they are the reigning African champions and have won the last editions of the AfroBasket.
