Abraham Destiny, popularly known as “Mezzaya” (pronounced ‘Messiah’), is a Nigerian recording artist, singer, and songwriter from Uselu, Edo State. With a childhood steeped in the church as the son of a pastor, Mezzaya’s love for music began early. Influenced by the legendary Michael Jackson, he not only mastered the moonwalk and other iconic dance moves but also rewrote some of Jackson’s songs into Christian versions. As he grew older, his passion for music crystallized, leading him to pursue a career in music. In 2018, he took the first step by releasing his debut single, “Sunshine,” as an independent artist.

Mezzaya’s calm and laid-back persona isn’t a crafted image; it’s simply who he is. “I’m someone who prefers to stay in my lane, avoiding unnecessary trouble. I believe in standing out rather than following the crowd. My name, Mezzaya, comes from ‘Messiah,’ and I see myself as a music redeemer here to breathe new life into the Nigerian music scene,” he shares.

The name “Mezzaya” is a unique take on the Biblical “Messiah.” Initially going by the name “Desty,” a shortened version of his real name, Mezzaya wanted something more distinctive. “After praying about it, ‘Messiah’ came to mind, and I looked up its meaning. One definition stood out to me: ‘The Anointed One.’ I decided to go with it but changed the spelling to avoid any disrespect to the one true Messiah, Jesus Christ,” he explains.

Looking ahead, Mezzaya sees a bright future. “In the next few years, I see myself flourishing as an artist, creating more incredible music, and growing my fanbase. I’m focused on honing my skills and being prepared for the opportunities that will come. I also envision performing at bigger venues, collaborating with other talented artists, and gaining recognition for my unique style—all by the special grace of God.”

Whenever the pressure of expectations mounts, Mezzaya turns to prayer. “Being raised in the church, I rely on God’s grace to guide me in improving my craft and staying true to what I do best.”

His music is a reflection of the love he grew up surrounded by. “While I make music for everyone—boys, girls, friends, and family—it’s true that love often inspires my lyrics. But my music is for all, not just for the ladies.”

When it comes to his creative process, Mezzaya lets inspiration lead the way. “I don’t approach the studio with a specific mindset. I just go with the flow and let inspiration guide me. My focus is always on delivering good music and spreading love.”

Michael Jackson remains a significant inspiration for Mezzaya, who considers him the greatest entertainer of the 20th and 21st centuries. “My passion for music is a blessing from God, and my inspiration comes from wanting to spread joy and happiness through my talent.”

As for what’s next, Mezzaya is working on new projects, though the specifics are still under wraps. “Like every artist, I’m working on new projects. I haven’t decided yet whether it will be a single, a full-length album, or an EP, but rest assured, once we finalize things, my fans will be the first to know.”

Mezzaya recently signed with BLACK DREAMS EMPIRE and is excited about the journey ahead. “BLACK DREAMS EMPIRE is my home, and I’m looking forward to doing great things with them. We’ve been working behind the scenes, putting the finishing touches on our plans before announcing our collaboration to the world. I can’t wait for my fans to see all the great stuff we have in store.”

For Mezzaya, staying grounded and constantly learning is crucial. “My sincere advice to upcoming artists is to always stay on your A-game. Keep reading, studying, and educating yourself because, as they say, no knowledge is a waste. Stay true to yourself, don’t be afraid to take risks, and experiment with different sounds and genres. Surround yourself with a supportive community, keep honing your skills, and never stop learning. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your talent. With dedication and hard work, you can make your mark in the music industry.”

Looking to the future, Mezzaya promises his fans more music, fresh videos, and plenty of positive vibes. “I’m here to bring greatness to the music space, and like my name says, the music Messiah is here.”

When it comes to collaborations, Mezzaya’s aspirations are global. “I’d love to work with everyone if I had the chance (laughs). Seriously though, I’d love to collaborate with Wizkid, Omah Lay, Burna Boy, Yung6ix, Davido, Chris Brown, and Drake, to name a few.”
