If, like me, you have embarked on a long-distance journey and on the way, you find out that your stomach can make more sounds than a generator as a result of hunger, gather here. I have found ways to overcome this dilemma for a better travel. Like you know, Nigeria is a nation with very nice delicacies. From north, south, east, and west, there are sumptuous snacks to tingle your taste buds while on the road. See below for healthy Nigerian foods for road travel:

It’s safe to mention that when you are doing road travel, eat lighter snacks that will not upset your stomach on the way. Buses would naturally stop at designated joints for a refill but be mindful of what you consume on the road for your tummy’s sake.

Chips

One healthy Nigerian snack that is particularly good for road travel is chips. You can get this as plantain chips, potato chips, or yam chips. These chips contain vitamins (A and C), fibre, potassium, and iron. They are also a good source of antioxidants, which help protect the body from damage and aging.

Chocolate

Chocolate is also a healthy choice for road travel. Sadly, most are not produced in Nigeria, but you can do dark chocolates for a snack. It is filled with antioxidants that can reduces oxidative stress. Also, it helps improve blood flow to other parts of your body, prevent stroke, and help balances blood pressure. And these benefits are just what you need. As you would be sitting in the bus for long, you need things that will help circulate more blood while giving your taste buds something to delight in.

Nuts

When it comes to nuts, I can boast that no one does it better than Nigerians. We have nuts in varieties, from roasted to grilled, to cooked. We have groundnuts, cashew nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds and even walnuts. If you are planning a road trip and you don’t have the intention of including these healthy nuts, you are snoozing. Wake up! Snacking on nuts can protect your heart, eyes and skin. This is because nuts contain vitamin E- essential nutrient for your body.

Suya

Some persons were actually waiting to see if I’ll end this list without mentioning our favourite– Suya. How can I? You need a properly grilled and seasoned Suya for your travel. If you don’t get it, how would you stay awake? Music won’t help now. Just get Suya or do Kilishi if that’s your preference. Remember I said ‘properly grilled’ before you begin to shoot fireworks in your stomach. Red meats are great sources of protein- a macronutrient that help with bone and muscle repairs. So, if you want your muscles to thank you at the end of your travel, include Suya to the list of snacks.

Fruits

Fruits are needed at all times, and they are quite handy if you’re thinking of space and stress. You can do dry fruits or fresh ones. I’ll suggest fresh because its nutrients are still very much intact. Go for apples, cucumbers, mangoes, carrots and any fruits of your choice. Fruits are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, and they are high in fiber. Plus, adding fruits that have high water content is essential so as to stay hydrated all through your travel. Enjoy!
