Victim confirms receipt of N3m extorted by police in Bayelsa

Kelechi Isaac, a victim of police extortion in Bayelsa State, has confirmed the recovery of the N3 million that was forcefully taken from him by officers of the Nigerian Police Force.

Isaac disclosed the receipt of the funds in a WhatsApp message on Friday night, according to a report by Premium Times.

“They have given me the money. I just arrived from Bayelsa,” Isaac stated.

He further explained that while the money was handed over in cash, he insisted the officers use a Point of Sale (PoS) agent to transfer the funds electronically to his account, which they complied with.

The extortion incident occurred on August 26, 2024, when five police officers reportedly stopped Isaac’s car in the Odi area of Bayelsa while he was returning from a wedding with two friends.

The officers allegedly threatened him at gunpoint, forcing him to transfer N3 million to two separate bank accounts.

Isaac, who is based in Ghana but hails from the Nguru Nworie community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, shared his experience in a viral video.

In the footage, he detailed the events of the extortion and how the officers coerced him into parting with the money.

In response, the Nigerian Police Force, through its spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of the officers involved in the extortion.

“The policemen involved in this case of extortion of N3 million have been arrested,” Adejobi announced in a statement last week.
