Sokoto begins sales of food items at 55% discount for residents
Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, inaugurated a special committee on Monday dedicated to selling assorted food items at a 55% discount to residents.
During the inauguration, Governor Aliyu said that the initiative aims to benefit all citizens, regardless of political or ethnic affiliations.
The governor explained that committee members were selected based on their integrity, with many agreeing to participate as a service to the state and its people.
He further noted various palliative measures introduced by his administration to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal and global economic challenges, saying: “Since the beginning of this political dispensation, we have witnessed numerous economic disturbances due to changes in global financial dynamics.”
He noted that the Federal Government’s reform policies, while aimed at redirecting the economy, have resulted in increased hardship for citizens.
The governor outlined his administration’s commitment to providing various palliatives, including free distribution of essential commodities to communities across the state, alongside subsidised transportation services.
He added that the state government is now introducing an additional measure to alleviate suffering through the discounted sales of food items, ensuring accessibility for all families.
He called on individuals and corporate entities to support the initiative, encouraging community engagement to broaden the reach of the program. Governor Aliyu urged Ulamas in the state to advocate for the importance of community support in overcoming economic challenges.
To ensure effective implementation, the governor announced the appointment of a state monitoring committee and local government coordinators to oversee the distribution of food items across Sokoto’s 23 Local Government Areas.
He stressed the importance of integrity and moral uprightness in the committee’s work.
Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo, the committee chairman, praised the governor for this timely initiative and assured the public of their commitment to fair and equitable distribution. He encouraged residents to support the committee’s efforts and urged security personnel and financial institutions to maintain professionalism in their roles.
