OAU Accounting Class of 2000 transforms dept of mgt & accounting with 50 computers and e-library upgrade

In a heartwarming act of philanthropy and commitment to education, the Class of 2000 from the Department of Management and Accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on October 29, 2024, delivered a transformative upgrade to their alma mater. The group donated 50 new computer systems, alongside a full refurbishment of the departmental library, including new chairs and tables, marking a significant enhancement to the university’s digital and academic resources.

The handover event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Banire, who officially commissioned the newly refurbished ICT room. In his address, Prof. Banire praised the alumni for their generosity, noting that the donation would benefit not just the Department of Management and Accounting but the entire university. “This is a gift to the whole school,” he said, “a resource that will expand learning opportunities and enhance the digital infrastructure for students and staff alike.”

Representing the Class of 2000 were Mr. David Fagbowore, the Class Financial Secretary, and Mr. Akintunde Akinmade, the Class PRO, as well as several members of the alumni group. It was a mixed feeling for them as they experienced the elation of being able to give back to their alma mater and the nostalgia of being back in the school and the department.

Mr. Oluyemi Abaolu-Johnson, the Class President, who was unable to attend the ceremony, expressed his heartfelt congratulations through the class representatives. They reiterated the Class’s gratitude to OAU for the foundational education it provided, stating that the donation is a small way to give back to the institution that shaped their careers.

The Dean of the Faculty of Administration, Prof. F.O. Fagbohun described the alumni’s contribution as a “one-of-a-kind gift” and encouraged other alumni groups to follow suit, given the university’s growing need for similar upgrades across various departments. “This gesture sets a powerful example for other sets,” Prof. Fagbohun noted, “and it’s an inspiring way to support the next generation of students.”

Equally moved, the Head of Department, Prof. G.O. Akinola, expressed her boundless joy and gratitude during the handover. “Today is a day of great pride for the department,” she said, beaming as she appreciated the Class of 2000 for their generosity. She emphasized how the upgraded facilities would dramatically improve students’ learning experiences, particularly in terms of digital proficiency and research capabilities. Prof. Akinola offered prayers and warm wishes to the alumni group, recognizing their lasting impact on the department’s future.

The newly equipped ICT lab and e-library will provide students with much-needed digital tools, including access to enhanced research capabilities and modern technology. The department, which has seen an increase in student enrollment over the years, will now be able to offer a more conducive learning environment, thereby raising the standard of academic performance across the board.

Monumental in both scale and scope, the donation is expected to spur similar contributions from other alumni groups, as OAU continues to focus on upgrading its infrastructure to meet the demands of modern education. The Class of 2000 has set the bar high, leaving a lasting legacy for current and future generations of students.
