Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has challenged old students to support their alma mater in the provision and development of infrastructure, noting that government alone cannot fund education.
Makinde made the appeal while inaugurating facilities donated by Government College Ibadan Old Students’ Association (GCIOSA) to their alma mater as part of efforts to boost teaching and learning.
The projects were inaugurated by the governor at the school’s 95th anniversary.
Makinde, in his address, commended the old students for their commitment to the revitalisation of the school, while emphasising their crucial roles in addressing infrastructural gaps in the sector.
National President of the association, Dr. Wale Babalakin, commended the state government for its support, urging other alumni associations to collaborate with the government in improving their alma mater, pointing out that government alone cannot solely fund education.
Babalakin emphasised the need for an education curriculum that will equip students with the skills required for the modern workforce.
He also emphasised the importance of investing in infrastructure and attracting quality teachers to ensure the school’s continued success.
Vice President of GCIOSA, Tola Obembe, said the gesture was a way of giving back to the institution that shaped them.
Olubi outlined the association’s 25-year plan to elevate the school, positioning it to be among the top 10 schools in the state.
He emphasised the need for continued support from old students to achieve set targets, particularly in attracting and retaining quality teachers.
Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Adebisi Shonubi, in his lecture at the weeklong event, emphasised the importance of teacher quality in improving outcomes, and stressed the need for effective pedagogical strategies to enhance learning.
Noting that effective teachers possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to create meaningful learning experiences for students, Shonubi said results of teachers’ efforts are felt much later in the future, especially when such a student takes up leadership roles.
