My father’s values motivated me to prioritise academic excellence – Samuel Ekpe

Real estate entrepreneur and mentor, Samuel Ekpe Adamu has spoken about his candid thoughts on values, failure, resilience, and journey to success.

Adamu said: “Born in Kaduna State, amidst significant challenges, my upbringing was a testament to resilience and the power of genuine parental support. My father’s words and actions instilled in me the belief that education was my path to a better future, and his encouragement laid the foundation for every success I’ve achieved.

“My father always said, ‘Education is the one thing no one can take away from you.’ This statement became a guiding light, especially during our family’s most turbulent times. The Sharia law tensions in 2000 forced us to leave our home, and even after seeking refuge in a military barracks, safety remained elusive. Eventually, we returned to our village to start over, but through it all, my father never wavered in his commitment to ensuring I prioritised my studies.

When we relocated, I had to start afresh at a new school, repeating a grade to catch up. It was disheartening, but my father reminded me, “No matter how far behind you think you are, persistence will always move you forward.” His words motivated me to persevere, and I carried that lesson through every stage of my education.

“From Army Children School in Kaduna to Lucy Memorial in Madalla, then to Government Model School in Suleja, Niger State, my academic journey was anything but smooth. Despite financial constraints and personal setbacks, my father’s encouragement remained a constant. “He used to tell me, ‘Hard work and focus will make up for what you lack,’” a mantra that kept me going even when balancing studies with working as a mason to support myself.

“By the time I reached Ambrose Alli University, where I earned my degree in Accounting, I had learned not only the value of education but also the importance of resilience. My father’s influence extended beyond academics. His belief in me inspired my first venture into real estate development in 2015, when I singlehandedly built a student accommodation in Ekpoma, Edo State.

“Every challenge is an opportunity in disguise,” my father often reminded me, and those words resonate with me to this day. They’ve shaped my outlook on life and business, allowing me to transform setbacks into stepping stones. Today, as a real estate developer, investor, and mentor, I strive to pass on the values my father instilled in me. Through the Samuel Ekpe Adamu Foundation, I support my community, driven by the lessons of compassion and perseverance he taught me.

“My father’s support for my education was not just a gift—it was a legacy. His encouragement reminds me that success is not defined by where you start but by the determination to move forward, one step at a time.”
