Healthcare workers in Lagos State have threatened to embark on a three-day warning strike set to begin on Wednesday, December 11 and end on Friday, December 13, 2024.
The healthcare workers—members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Joint Health Sector Unions, and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria—in separate letters expressed their frustration over the government’s failure to address their demands.
The was letters were addressed to their members and the Lagos State Head of Service.
The Guardian learnt that these healthcare workers want the government to implement the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustment for all health workers.
They also accused the government of implementing the adjustment of the salary structure for doctors while neglecting other healthcare workers. This, JOHESU termed a “divisive approach.”
“Despite the critical roles we play in ensuring quality healthcare delivery in Lagos State, the government appears indifferent to our legitimate demands. This divisive approach undermines the collective morale of health professionals,” a letter written by JOHESU to the Lagos State Head of Service read in part.
In NUAHP’s letter, the union also decried the government’s delay in implementing the 25% CONHESS adjustment.
The unions noted that they had met with government officials and written to them on several occasions, but their demands were ignored.
They have scheduled a joint congress meeting for Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where they will discuss strategies for the industrial action and provide further directives to their members.
