The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has rolled out initiatives to enhance and sustain food security efforts in the country.
In a New Year message posted on his official X handle, @SenatorAKyari, the minister highlighted some of the initiatives lined up for 2025, including strengthening programmes for smallholder farmers by improving access to resources, technology, and funding through increased financial assistance and training opportunities.
He said that the government will also promote eco-friendly farming practices by identifying new initiatives that will encourage sustainable farming methods and provide advanced equipment to enhance agricultural productivity.
He added, “We are introducing a new initiative to promote greenhouse farming and family garden projects, which will encourage sustainable food production at the household level.” he said.
Other initiatives include improved food distribution systems, with efforts to ensure that vulnerable communities have access to nutritious food through diverse community programmes.
Also, tractors and other heavy-duty machinery will be distributed nationwide to help farmers expand their cultivated land.
Kyari further stressed his commitment to promoting private sector involvement in the federal government’s food security programmes.
“Our vision is to create an environment where financial institutions are encouraged to fund agriculture, enabling both smallholder farmers and large-scale investors to access credit and improve their production capacity,” he stated.
Reflecting on the past year, he said that while many achievements were celebrated, he acknowledged the challenges that remain.
“As we step into 2025, my dedication to ensuring food security and sustainability is stronger than ever,” he stated.
The minister, however, called on state governments, farmers, and all stakeholders to unite in building a resilient agricultural sector that can withstand the challenges of climate change and meet global demands.
He said, “This New Year is a call to action for all of us. Together, let us strive to achieve a thriving agricultural sector that ensures food security and sustains our nation’s growth.”
Kyari also extended his heartfelt New Year greetings to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
He said, “As we welcome the New Year, I extend my warmest wishes for a prosperous and rewarding 2025. May this year provide you with the strength and wisdom needed to lead our great nation.”
