Four persons have been confirmed dead and seven others injured in a boat mishap in Kano State
A devastating boat mishap occurred on the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route on Sunday, January 19, 2025, resulting in the loss of three people, including a toddler.

The tragic incident sent shockwaves through the community. The Bonny Local Council confirmed the incident, extending condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims.

The Chairman of Bonny Council, Anengi Claude-Wilcox, in a statement yesterday, signed by the Secretary to the Bonny Local Council, John Gabriel-Pepple, said she was deeply saddened by the incident.

According to the statement, preliminary findings showed that the mishap was caused by a sudden rise of an oceanic storm that troubled the boat, leading to the unfortunate incident.

The council also confirmed that 19 survivors were immediately taken for medical attention at the expense of the Bonny Council. The statement read: “We extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims. May God grant you all the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

However, in a disturbing twist, the council revealed that a passenger boat was encountered at the scene of the incident, but refused to stop and rescue the victims while they were struggling to survive at sea.

The council is urging anyone with information about the boat driver to come forward and contact the council’s secretary. The council also advised travellers by water to exercise caution, adhering strictly to safety rules and measures to prevent future recurrence.
