Enrol for sustainable skills courses, Rector urges UTME candidates

The Rector, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Dr Ibraheem Abdul, has charged prospective admission seekers to enrol for sustainable skills courses. Abdul, who gave the charge at the presentation of prizes to winners of Maritime Quiz Competition, organised by Ocean Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, said embracing such courses will empower them for the future.
The Rector lamented that most students enrol for courses that may not earn them sustainable livelihood, and enjoined them to key into untapped skills that will empower them for the future.He also called on secondary school administrators to embark on intensive orientation and counselling of their students on the need to embrace skills-based programmes if the education system must change.
Abdul, while presenting the winner, Uhie Pentecost, a senior secondary two student of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary (BMJS), Ikorodu, with a laptop, counselled the students on the need to learn, re-learn, and unlearn skills, reminding that continuous learning is imperative.
The President, Ocean Foundation, Olaitan Williams, said the competition was aimed at encouraging youths and building their interest in the maritime sector. According to her, about 3,000 students participated in the competition, while 100 eventually made it to the final stage. She noted that the gospel of maritime study as preached across the country through the foundation culminated in the large number of participants at the event.
