The Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Muhammed Pate, has praised global bodies for their contributions to ensuring that Nigeria’s healthcare sector is being funded.
In a post seen on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he praised the World Bank, USAID, PEPFAR, Global Fund, Gavi, UNICEF, Gates Foundation, among others.
Pate said that many areas in the health sector need more funding, especially in infrastructure, financing, affordability, and human resources issues— which are not yet completely resolved, but the direction is clear, and the future is bright.
The statement read, “Over the past 18 months, our commitment has been clear: to strengthen governance, expand access to quality healthcare, unlock the health sector’s value chain, and enhance health security. Working with our federal and state counterparts, development partners, and frontline health workers, we have laid a strong foundation for a sector-wide approach that fosters collaboration, efficiency, and accountability.
“None of these strides would have been possible without the steadfast support of our partners: @USAGov, USAID, @WorldBank, @GlobalFund, @WHO, @UNICEF, @gatesfoundation, @CHAI_health.
“Looking ahead, our focus must shift toward sustainable domestic financing. While donor support remains crucial, we are scaling up government allocations for health, exploring blended financing mechanisms, and strengthening private sector engagement to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
“This is not just about policy; it is about the lives we’re transforming and the future we are shaping. The ship we’re building is now sailing, and the plane we are assembling is in flight.
“Our destination is a stronger, more resilient health sector that every Nigerian can trust and take pride in. With the continued commitment of all stakeholders, we are poised to achieve a health system that ultimately delivers on the promise of equity, quality, and sustainability.”
