UNICAL honours Enang as it marks 50th anniversary

As part of the ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), the institution, on Thursday, honoured an Associate Professor of Medicine and its Acting Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Ofem Egbe Enang, with a meritorious service award.

The award was bestowed on Enang in recognition of his “meritoriousness, industriousness and dedication to duty in ensuring that the objectives and goals of this university are achieved.”

The Awards ceremony was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, and was attended by the university management, members of the Senate of the university as well as staff and students.

Other awards included Long & Dedicated Service Award, Best Deans, Outstanding Lecturers in Faculties/Institutes, and more.

They were bestowed on staff who have distinguished themselves in the service of the university, including the former Provost of the College of Medical Sciences and member of the Governing Council, Prof. Victor Ansa, also of the Department of Internal Medicine.

Enang is an accomplished Clinician in practice with a professional MPH and Fellowship in Endocrinology, who has demonstrated leadership experience in human and material management, leading peers and superiors in building teams within a research-focused and training environment.

He deploys knowledge and skills from over 30 years of experience in medical practice. He has a good teamwork ethic and compliance with ethical standards. He also has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure to achieve objectives within specified timelines.

He is a member of the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Class of 2015/2016 of Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA with a Certificate in Clinical Research (Clinical Trial Specialisation).

He graduated in 1992 with an MBBch from the University of Calabar . He obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2009 from the University of Lagos and a Fellowship from the National Medical College (FMCP) in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 2013.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

He was a Visiting Lecturer at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, USA in 2021 and is currently an Associate Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Calabar and an Honorary Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar.

He had served as President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-UCTH 2003-2005), President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD 2006), and Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State (2010-2012).

He was a Member of the Board of Management at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, from May 2013- July 2015. He served as the Deputy Chairman, of the Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC T&R) in charge of Training and Research at UCTH (2016-2019) and he was a Past Second Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) 2018-2020.
