SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd is a fashion brand headed by Mercy John Otisi, a product designer and garment constructor. Under her creative direction, SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd has consistently experimented with texture, proportion, and form. With the release of the Angels’ Cadets collection on October 18, 2021, Mercy takes a measured approach to design, crafting pieces that are simultaneously exuberant and wearable.

The lace and Ankara shorts set is particularly noteworthy for its juxtaposition of fitted tailoring and relaxed draping. However, the POMs in this design reveal minor inconsistencies in the hip-to-thigh ratio, which slightly disrupts the form of the outfit. Conversely, the high-low skirt presents a well-thought-out volumetric distribution, ensuring the weight of the fabric doesn’t overpower the wearer. The waist fit is precise, and the cascading hemline maintains an elegant flow. The construction of the high-low skirt demonstrates a more confident approach to stitch execution. The pleating is crisp, and the hemline is neatly finished, preventing fraying. However, the hidden inner seams lack the polish expected of a collection at this level, as the serging is visible in some areas where a cleaner binding technique would have elevated the overall craftsmanship.

SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd, led by Mercy John Otisi, unveils Angels' Cadets, a striking collection blending Ankara and lace in contemporary designs. With bold tailoring and intricate pleating, the collection highlights craftsmanship while hinting at areas for refinement in garment construction.

Mercy’s choice of materials is one of the collection’s strengths. The lace has a delicate yet structured hand feel. The Ankara fabric used in the shorts set and the high-low skirt bring the necessary weight and durability to balance the more fragile lace components. Additionally, the branding labels and size tags, while functional, lack the sophistication that could enhance the perceived luxury of the garments. An embroidered tag would have strengthened the brand’s identity within the collection. Mercy’s illustrative direction in Angels’ Cadets reflects a designer with a clear artistic voice, yet one still honing the ability to translate sketches into garments. The pleating work of the high-low skirt remains true to the sketch’s intent, though the front-facing proportions could have been refined for a more streamlined drape.

This collection demonstrates that SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd is capable of producing statement pieces, yet it also emphasizes the necessity of precision in garment engineering. The target audience for this collection is clear, fashion-forward individuals who appreciate bold styling and cultural fabric integration. However, market performance will largely hinge on consumer perception of use. The high-low skirt, with its adaptable styling potential, has strong commercial viability, while the shorts set may require a more niche audience. If future collections perform better as regards construction quality, the brand could cement itself as a leader in the Nigerian contemporary fashion scene.
