Adedapo Aderemi Gabriel, a seasoned civil and mining engineer with over 19 years of experience, is leading the charge in advocating for sustainable practices in Nigeria’s infrastructure and mining sectors. A key player in the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Gabriel’s expertise spans civil engineering, mining regulations, and quality control management. He has significantly influenced construction compliance, environmental protection, and industry regulations through his dedication to safety, sustainability, and innovation.

Gabriel’s engineering journey began with a keen interest in how infrastructures are built to serve communities while ensuring safety and sustainability. “Every project is an opportunity to make a lasting impact, not just on the environment but on the communities that will rely on these structures,” he said. His early years were spent mastering the technical aspects of civil engineering, and over time, he became a driving force in shaping building codes and mining regulations across Lagos State.

One of his most notable achievements has been his work in integrating sustainable practices into mining operations. Gabriel played a crucial role in the development of mining guidelines based on global best practices, ensuring compliance with environmental standards. “It’s important that mining contributes positively to the economy without leaving a trail of environmental degradation,” he explained. Gabriel’s efforts in restoring degraded mine sites and promoting environmentally-friendly extraction methods have made a considerable difference in reducing the negative impact of mining on local communities and ecosystems.

His tenure at LASBCA further showcased his commitment to safety and compliance. By overseeing the quality control of numerous construction projects, Gabriel ensured they adhered to the highest safety standards and building codes. His work has directly impacted the improvement of construction safety, not only in Lagos but across other regions in Nigeria, where similar regulations have since been adopted.

In recent years, Gabriel has expanded his focus, pursuing an MSc. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Highway and Traffic Management. This ongoing education reflects his commitment to staying at the forefront of the engineering field and continuously improving his contributions to Nigerian infrastructure. “Engineering is an ever-evolving field. To stay relevant, we must constantly adapt and incorporate new knowledge into our practices,” Gabriel said.

As a leader, Gabriel is not only concerned with the technical execution of projects but also with the professional development of his peers. He regularly mentors younger engineers and advocates for greater representation of African engineers on the global stage. “We have a wealth of talent here in Africa, but we need more platforms for mentorship, resources, and collaboration,” he noted.

Gabriel’s long-term vision is to establish Nigeria as a global leader in sustainable engineering and mining practices. He is dedicated to promoting policies that encourage the integration of green technologies and practices into the engineering industry. He hopes that by the time the next generation takes charge, sustainable development will be at the core of every major project.

Gabriel’s advice to aspiring engineers is clear: “Master the fundamentals, stay curious, and always push the boundaries of what is possible. Our future depends on the solutions we create today.”

Adedapo Aderemi Gabriel’s professional journey is a testament to the transformative power of engineering and the positive impact it can have on society, shaping not just the structures of tomorrow, but the sustainable future of Nigeria itself.
