Chief of Mission of the Taiwan Government in Nigeria, Mr Andy Liu, has strongly condemned what he described as increasing military aggression by China towards Taiwan, urging the international community, including Nigeria, to pay closer attention and stand in solidarity with democratic nations.
Speaking during a media briefing, Liu asserted that China’s actions were not only provocative but also self-defeating.
“The world is watching the Chinese military actions. The way they are threatening and bullying us, they are only making a fool of themselves.
“Taiwan has never backed down. We have nowhere else to go. This is our island. We built it into a democratic society, just like Nigeria. So how can a military dictatorship, like China, threaten a democracy like Taiwan?” He said.
He further accused Beijing of misusing historical documents to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty. Specifically, he referenced the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, passed in 1971, which led to Taiwan’s withdrawal from the UN and the recognition of the People’s Republic of China. Liu clarified that the resolution never addressed the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty.
“The Chinese government is distorting this resolution to falsely claim Taiwan is part of China, but our government participated in the founding of the United Nations in 1946, before the current Chinese regime even existed. We voluntarily withdrew in 1971; this resolution does not mean Taiwan is under China’s rule,” he added.
According to Liu, recent Chinese military drills, from early April, have further highlighted Beijing’s strategy of intimidation. However, he noted that such tactics have had little impact on Taiwan’s preparedness or spirit.
