Police debunk claims of Boko Haram invasion in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a trending video suggesting a Boko Haram invasion in Oyo Town. In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Osifeso Adewale, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the command clarified that the video, allegedly showing articulated trucks carrying motorcycles and weapons, is a recycled clip from 2022.

Osifeso described the video’s circulation as a calculated attempt by mischief-makers to spread falsehoods and incite fear within the community.

“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to address the recent circulation of misleading information on social media regarding a video that purportedly shows an attempted invasion of Oyo State by Boko Haram elements intercepted along the Ibadan Express Road. The video has been verified as outdated and poses no current threat to the safety and security of Oyo State,” the statement read.

To further disprove the video’s relevance, Osifeso noted that the Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Segun Adeyemo, who briefly appeared in the clip, retired from the police force in August 2024 after a distinguished career.

The command reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to avoid circulating outdated content, particularly materials capable of inciting fear. Citizens were advised to verify information through credible sources before sharing it on social media.

“We kindly request the public to adopt a cautious approach when sharing information, ensuring it is thoroughly verified to prevent unnecessary alarm and disruption to social order,” Osifeso added.

The police also called for vigilance among residents and encouraged them to report any suspicious activities promptly. “Together, we can uphold the safety and security of our community,” the command emphasised.
