The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has described the death of veteran journalist and public relations icon, Oloye Lekan Alabi, as devastating and heartbreaking, saying Ibadan has lost one of its finest sons and a proud custodian of its cultural heritage.

 

In a statement issued by his media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, the monarch recalled his longstanding relationship with the late Alabi, noting that they both grew up in the Born Photo area of Isale-Osi, Ibadan.

 

Oba Ladoja said the late public relations practitioner possessed an extraordinary memory and often regaled him with vivid accounts of their childhood and the history of their community.

 

The Olubadan also extolled Alabi’s outstanding contributions to journalism and public relations, describing him as an unapologetic promoter of Ibadan’s customs and traditions, which he championed with uncommon passion and commitment.

 

The monarch recalled that while serving as Acting Chairman of the Ibadan South-East Traditional Council, the late Alabi distinguished himself through punctuality, diligence and insightful contributions to discussions on traditional and customary matters.

 

According to the statement, “Oloye Lekan Alabi was an amazing human being who made remarkable contributions to journalism, public relations and the promotion of Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage. His death is devastating and heartbreaking.”

 

Oba Ladoja prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and urged God to grant his family, associates and the people of Ibadan the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

 

Alabi, a veteran journalist and respected public relations practitioner, served as Chief Press Secretary to four governors of the old Oyo State between 1983 and 1989. They included the late Chief Bola Ige, Major General Oladayo Popoola, the late Brigadier-General Adetunji Olurin and the late Brigadier-General Sasaenia Oresanya.

 

His distinguished career in government communication earned him widespread recognition as one of Nigeria’s foremost public relations professionals.
