Mele Kyari defends NNPCL legacy amid probe rumours

The former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has responded to calls for his investigation, asserting that he served the country diligently during his tenure.

In a statement, Kyari emphasized his commitment to both Nigeria and his faith, stating, “I served not only my country but also God. I am happy to account for my stewardship.”

His comments came in response to reports from an online newspaper suggesting that he was in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which he described as “clear mischief” and a “calculated attempt” to manipulate public perception.

Kyari clarified that he was currently taking a break after the dissolution of the NNPCL’s management and board.

“At present, I am taking a well-deserved rest after the dissolution of the management and board of the NNPCL, of which I was the Group Chief Executive,” he stated.

Kyari, who served NNPC and NNPCL for 34 years, including 17 years in management positions, reflected on his long service, highlighting that he had little time for leave.

“I had little time for leave of even two weeks. So, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve under their Excellencies Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

He also addressed concerns regarding his accountability, saying, “I served with the fear of God, knowing fully well as a Muslim that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah.”

Kyari stressed his readiness to account for his actions, stressing that the ongoing disinformation surrounding his departure from office could harm the reputation of both NNPCL and the country. He urged the media to be cautious, saying, “It is important to state that the resort to disinformation does not serve anyone’s purpose.”

Kyari concluded by reassuring his family and friends who had reached out to him, affirming that he was available to respond to any lawful inquiries.
“I sincerely thank my family and friends who have reached out to me or tried to do so and assure them that I am available to respond to all lawful queries,” he said.
