Key verse:Deuteronomy 7:9: “Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations,” (KJV).
Moses was preaching to the people of God prior to the Israelites entry into Canaan, the Promised Land. He reminded them of their special covenant with God and the conditions of that covenant. Moses was retelling the covenant story to remind everyone of God’s faithfulness and also, to call the people to remain faithful to Him.
What does it mean to say God is faithful? It means, He is a Man of His word. It means, when He makes a promise, He will keep it. It means, He is the same God of yesterday, today and tomorrow. It means,we can rely on Him in all seasons. Everything in life— our bodies, relationship with people andplans — change from time to time, but God cannot change. God is constant and we can depend on Him. His characters and promises do not change. God is unchanging and steadfast. He is unmoved in His character and words. Moses reminded the people of God of God’s faithfulness. And that He will always fulfill His promises.
We are to know that without a shadow of turning that the eternal Creator of Heaven and earth has an everlasting covenant with us, and He will fulfill all He Has promised us. We are to know that He is our Lord and God, and He is faithful and true in all that He says and in all that He has promised. We are to know without question or query that God who has adopted us as His children, has made us accepted in the Beloved. He has sealed us with His Holy Spirit, come to dwell within our mortal bodies, and has also given us an everlasting assurance that in His sight we are saved, sanctified, glorified, and have already been given eternal life.
Our acceptance in the Beloved is as sure as His sovereign character, as extensive as His infinite strength, and as glorious as His unconditional love. And He Has pledged mercy on all that love Him and keep His commandments — to a thousand generations.
We are to know that without fear that the Lord our God is a covenant keeping God. His promises stand sure and for every promise and covenant that has been given to us as His children is ‘yes’ and ‘amen’ in Christ Jesus, our Lord. All that is required of us is to trust Him as ourSaviour and hand everything over to Him, so that, in His power, strength, and love, He can work in us and through us, as He slowly and surely conforms us into the image of His Son, to the praise of His holy name.
We are exhorted in Scripture to “Know” that the “Lord” is God; to know that He is the true and living God, to know He is faithful, and to know that He keeps His covenant promises forever.
