Taraba Govt deploys emergency relief to Binnari attack victims

Taraba Govt deploys emergency relief to Binnari attack victims

The Taraba state government has deployed emergency relief materials to residents displaced by the reported attack on Binnari community in Karim-Lamido local government council , following the directive of governor Agbu Kefas to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to victims.

The intervention, coordinated by the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA), came less than 24 hours after suspected gunmen reportedly attacked the community at about 3 p.m. on Friday, leaving several families displaced and in need of urgent support.

The swift deployment of the agency underscores the immediate humanitarian response mounted by the state government as affected residents grapple with the consequences of the attack, including the loss of homes and essential belongings.

On the governor’s directive, TSEMA officials were deployed to Binnari to assess the extent of the damage and distribute relief materials to affected households.

The assessment and distribution exercise was led by the agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Audu Echuseh, alongside lawmakers representing Karim-Lamido constituencies in the Taraba State House of Assembly, Anas Shuaibu Didango and Abner Shittu.

Other participants included the Vice Chairman of Karim-Lamido Local Government Council, Alhaji Uba Munyarda, traditional rulers and community stakeholders, who joined the team in identifying the immediate needs of affected residents.

The relief materials distributed, as observed by The Guardian, included foodstuffs, mattresses, blankets and other essential non-food items intended to provide temporary support to families who lost their homes or were forced to flee the community.

Speaking during the exercise, Echuseh said the intervention was intended to demonstrate the government’s solidarity with the victims while providing immediate relief to those affected by the violence.

“We are here on behalf of the Taraba State Government to show solidarity and provide immediate succour to our brothers and sisters in Binnari. His Excellency has directed that no victim of this dastardly act be left unattended to,” she said.

She explained that the distribution represented the first phase of the intervention, adding that the government was committed to addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected population.

According to her, the government’s response would extend beyond the provision of food and other essential supplies to include support for recovery and efforts to improve security in the community.

Beyond the distribution of relief materials, TSEMA’s presence in Binnari was also aimed at determining the extent of the destruction and identifying additional needs arising from the attack.

Echuseh acknowledged that the assistance provided during the exercise was limited, noting that the agency was also assessing the situation to guide further humanitarian interventions.

She assured residents that Governor Kefas was concerned about the safety and welfare of people across the state and was working with security agencies to restore peace and normalcy to the affected area.

The assessment is expected to provide the state government with information on the scale of the displacement, the condition of affected households and the additional assistance required to support recovery.

However, the extent of the destruction, the number of displaced persons and the full scale of humanitarian needs were not specified in the statement announcing the intervention.

The government also urged residents to remain calm and vigilant while cooperating with security agencies.
Echuseh appealed to community members to provide credible information that could assist security operatives in preventing further attacks and identifying those responsible for the violence.

The lawmakers and other stakeholders who participated in the relief distribution commended the governor for directing the immediate deployment of humanitarian assistance to the affected community.

Didango and Shittu, who led the legislative representation during the exercise, pledged continued collaboration with the state government to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Karim-Lamido.

Their participation, as noticed by our correspondent, highlighted the involvement of political and community representatives in the immediate response to the incident, particularly in identifying local needs and engaging with affected residents.

Traditional leaders and other stakeholders also took part in the exercise, providing a platform for coordination between the emergency management agency, local government authorities and the community.

The government said it remained committed to supporting affected residents and addressing humanitarian needs arising from the attack.

While the distribution of food, mattresses, blankets and other essential items offers temporary assistance to displaced families, the broader challenge will be ensuring that affected residents can recover from the attack and return to normal life under safe conditions.

For families who have lost their homes and belongings, immediate relief is only the first step towards recovery. Further assessments will be necessary to establish the scale of their losses and determine the level of assistance required.

Equally important is the restoration of security in Binnari and neighbouring communities, as residents’ ability to rebuild their lives will depend largely on their safety and confidence that further attacks can be prevented.

The state’s emergency response has provided an initial intervention for affected households, but the long-term outcome will depend on sustained humanitarian support, effective security measures and continued engagement with the community.

For now, the Kefas administration has assured residents of its commitment to supporting victims, while TSEMA’s assessment is expected to help determine the next steps in the government’s response.

As Binnari begins to confront the aftermath of the reported attack, the immediate priorities remain the protection of lives, assistance to displaced families and the restoration of lasting peace in the area.
