A Nigerian scholar and advocate,Abosede Omowunmi Tibetan, has been conferred with the title of Matron by the Association of Female Comrades (AFC), a national movement committed to the advancement of gender equality and women’s empowerment across Nigeria and beyond.
Tibetan, a multi disciplinary academic achiever, has earned degrees in various fields and is widely recognised for her passion for women’s health, with a specific focus on stress related conditions affecting women and girls. Her strong belief that mental and emotional well being particularly stress management is central to overall human health has fueled her research and advocacy for policies that protect and support the health needs of women in Nigeria and across the African continent.
This recognition by the AFC is not only a testament to her academic excellence but also to her longstanding commitment to empowering the female gender. As the newly appointed Matron of the Association of Female Comrades, Tibetan joins the leadership of an organisation known for its tireless advocacy for the rights of women and the girl child. With chapters across Nigeria’s 36 states and active engagements in the diaspora, the AFC has been at the forefront of championing causes such as increased female participation in politics, gender sensitive governance, education for girls, and economic inclusion.
“Omowunmi’s work reflects the very soul of our mission to be the voice of the voiceless and to uplift women across all spheres of life,” said the AFC National President during the induction ceremony. “Her passion for female health, particularly her focus on addressing stress as a neglected aspect of women’s well being, positions her as a much needed thought leader in our community.”
Omowunmi Tibetan’s journey has inspired many from her academic achievements to her grassroots initiatives targeting young girls and vulnerable women. She has often stated that investing in women’s mental and emotional health is not a luxury but a necessity, and she continues to work with institutions, researchers, and community leaders to ensure this vision is realised.
The conferment of this honour further cements her place among Nigeria’s leading women advocates. It also serves as a call to action for more inclusive policies and a renewed focus on women’s health in national development agendas.
