Research institution seeks 10 African artists to harness AI for social change

The S+T+ARTS Afropean Intelligence, an initiative of the European Commission (EU) to promote innovation at the nexus of Science, Technology, and the Arts (STARTS) is calling on 10 African artists to embark on a transformative journey and push the boundaries of artistic expression through the innovative application of Artificial Intelligence.

Mr Oscar Ekponimo, Managing Director, Gallery of Code, the host institution in Nigeria for the S+T+ARTS Afropean Intelligence project said this in a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Ekponimo said the project offers a unique opportunity for 10 talented African artists with a demonstrated interest in exploring the potential of AI.

He said the initiative is about building a vibrant network of creative minds, united by a shared commitment to social justice and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.

“The project seeks to explore themes of AI Ethics, social justice, inclusivity, and the dismantling of harmful racial paradigms in the advancement of AI.

“This isn’t just about adding a technological veneer to existing practices; it’s about a fundamental shift in how we conceive of art’s role in society.

“We are seeking artists who are passionate about using their creative talents to interrogate pressing social issues, challenge established narratives, and foster a more inclusive and equitable world,’’ he said.

He said the program is a fully funded residency program designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and the transformative power of art.

He said “We are looking for artists across Africa to apply for residencies hosted in Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo who possess a strong artistic vision, a commitment to social impact, and a willingness to embrace new technologies.

“Artists from Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are encouraged to apply online at (http://starts.eu/detail/starts-afropean-intelligence-residencies-program/) latest by June 27 2025.
