If happiness were a passport, these countries would be first-class destinations.

According to the newly released World Happiness Report 2025, Finland is still holding tight to its crown as the happiest country in the world. This marks the eighth year in a row that the Nordic country has ranked number one.

The report, which is published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in collaboration with Gallup and the Oxford Center for Well-Being Research, evaluates life satisfaction based on six things. These include income per person, access to social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

Here’s a look at the ten countries that topped the global happiness chart in 2025:

1. Finland
From their education system to mental health care, Finland seems to have cracked the code on living well. Their strong public services and close-knit communities keep them smiling.

2. Denmark
The Danes are big on equality and social trust. They value simplicity, balance, and a good dose of hygge, their version of cosy contentment.

3. Iceland
With fewer people and more peace, Icelanders report feeling secure and supported. Their strong gender equality and tight communities add to their happiness levels.

4. Sweden
Sweden blends modern comforts with nature. Add in long parental leave and quality education, and it’s no surprise they rank so high.

5. Israel
Despite the country’s complex issues, Israelis score high in life satisfaction. Strong family values and resilience seem to play a key role.

6. Netherlands
Known for being tolerant and progressive, the Dutch benefit from reliable healthcare, green spaces, and solid infrastructure.

7. Norway
Norwegians enjoy one of the world’s most generous welfare systems. Their oil wealth has been channelled into education, healthcare, and a good standard of living.

8. Luxembourg
This tiny European country punches above its weight. High income levels and efficient public systems help create a high quality of life.

9. Switzerland
Clean cities, scenic mountains, and a focus on privacy and order. The Swiss way of life is calm, organised, and secure.

10. Australia
Sunshine, open spaces, and a relaxed attitude toward life continue to make Australians some of the world’s happiest people.

As for Nigeria, it dropped slightly to number 105 out of 147 countries this year, slipping from 102 in the 2024 report. Still, it ranks as the tenth happiest country in Africa, with Libya leading the continent at number 79.
The 2025 report paid special attention to how caring, sharing, and connection shape people’s happiness across the world.
