Residents of Taraba State and Nigerians at large have been urged to report any violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard fundamental human rights and promote peaceful coexistence.
The call was made on Monday in Jalingo during the screening of Bridging the Abyss, a documentary focused on promoting and protecting freedom of religion or belief (FoRB). The event, held in Jalingo, drew students from various tertiary institutions across the state.
Organised by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the screening aimed to raise awareness about individuals’ rights to freely practice their faith and foster tolerance and understanding within diverse communities.
Speaking at the event, Katlong Dasat, Senior Media Officer at SFCG, described freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right enshrined in international law.
“Millions of people around the world still suffer discrimination, harassment, and violence because of their religious beliefs,” she said.
SFCG Project Manager, Gaius Dachet, highlighted that religious freedom is not solely a religious issue but one that is intricately linked to peace, security, and sustainable development. He emphasized that upholding these freedoms could help prevent conflict both in Taraba and across Nigeria.
Participants were encouraged to report any violations of their religious rights using a toll-free and confidential helpline—0800-000-2233.
“If you are facing discrimination or violations of your beliefs, call the toll-free line. It is confidential and free,” Dasat assured.
Students and other attendees welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about religious rights. Many pledged to share the knowledge gained with their peers and communities.
Panelists at the event—many of them university lecturers—also urged participants to actively spread awareness about religious freedom and to promote a culture of tolerance in their respective environments.
