Tinubu replaces NLRC nominee after Alkali misses Senate screening

President Bola Tinubu has replaced Professor Fatima Alkali with Professor Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf as his nominee for the position of Commissioner at the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC), following her failure to appear for Senate confirmation.

The replacement was announced in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Wednesday’s plenary session. Tinubu’s request was made in line with Section 21 of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022.

“Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination of Professor Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf in an expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President and Distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the President wrote.

Professor Alkali was originally nominated on June 2, 2025, but did not present herself for screening, prompting the withdrawal of her nomination.

Senate President Akpabio has directed the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to handle the screening of the new nominee and report back with its findings.
