Residents and motorists in Edo State, on Friday, urged the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to focus on road infrastructure, by rehabilitating several deplorable roads across Benin City, and its environs, saying even the road leading to the Edo State Government House is in a bad state.
The residents said the government should concern itself with delivering on road infrastructure, which is already in a worsening condition owing to the heavy rainfall occasioned by the rainy season.
A resident, John Osagie, said the two link roads in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) to the Government House were riddled with pot holes and heavy flooding.
He advised the Okpebholo-led government to pay attention to the reconstruction of roads and rehabilitation of failed roads across the state, both state and federal roads.
“Bad roads and flooding menace are visible everywhere and have become a nightmare for Edo people”, he lamented. He recalled how a pupil lost his life in the flood in the state, while going to sit for the First School Leaving Certificate Examination.
“We are unhappy with the way roads have remained unattended to, since the new government came on board.
“Okpebholo should help Edo people with good roads. All our roads are in deplorable conditions.
“We lost a 12-year-old pupil named Nathan Paul Spencer, who died after being swept away by floodwaters in Benin City, while on his way for an examination.
“That unfortunate incident was avoidable if the government made an effort to solve the flooding in the state. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, July 5, 2025, during a heavy downpour that caused severe flooding. “he said.
A motorist, John Imade, said the roads within Benin City were terrible and needed government attention. He said:” Major roads, including those in town and outskirts, are very bad. Sadly, even the road just by the Edo NUJ secretariat linking the Edo Government House and from the Golf Course axis to the Army formation, close to the Edo Government House are all water logged and in deplorable condition, “he said.
