A boat carrying commodities and an unspecified number of passengers en route to the Kwata-Zumba market in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State capsized on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists in Minna by the Director of Information and Special Duties, Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini.
According to the statement, the boat capsized at approximately 11:45 a.m. The boat operator and a few passengers were rescued, with one of the survivors currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Kuta and reported to be responding well.
While the exact number of casualties remains unknown, search and rescue operations are ongoing. NSEMA officers, local divers, and community volunteers are involved in the effort to locate any missing persons.
