Chairman of Rano Local Government Area in Kano, Muhammad Naziru Ya’u, has been suspended for three months for alleged misappropriation of council funds.
The LG boss, who was suspended by the State House of Assembly, was also indicted for diversion of fertiliser meant to be sold to public farmers at subsidised rates.
The Assembly reached the resolution at the plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Jibril Isma’il Falgore on Wednesday, after the House received the report of investigation from the Standing Committee on Public Petition.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Hon. Lawan Hussaini Dala, disclosed that the probe was compelled by a petition signed by nine out of the ten councillors of Rano Local Government and transmitted to the House.
Dala, who is also the Majority Leader of the Assembly, said the councillors accused the chairman of the sale of shops, among other atrocities alleged against the council boss.
The Majority Leader, although affirming that Dala denied the allegations slammed against him, insisted the committee was convinced after a thorough investigation.
He posited that, in line with Section 128 of the Constitution and Section 55 (1–6) of the Kano State Local Government Law 2006, which empowers the Assembly with the oversight function, the committee recommended the suspension of the council chairman for three months.
He said the suspension period will enable a thorough investigation to be carried out on the controversial issues and allegations.
Other recommendations include the immediate submission of Rano LGA’s 2025 financial statement and the appointment of the vice chairman to serve in an acting capacity during the suspension.
After careful deliberations, the House adopted the committee’s recommendations, effectively suspending the chairman and placing the Local Government Council under temporary oversight.
