TRCN digital portal, a game changer, says minister

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, has described the newly-launched Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal as a game changer, and ‘defining moment’ in Nigeria’s education sector.

Speaking at the unveiling in Abuja, Ahmad explained that the portal would streamline the registration and licensing of teachers nationwide, provide a transparent database of qualified professionals, and offer real-time access to training and development opportunities.

Ahmad noted that the system was designed to address the long-standing challenges of cumbersome processes and lack of accountability, while restoring dignity to the teaching profession. She said: “Teaching in Nigeria will no longer be treated as a fallback option, but as a noble, respected, and digitally empowered profession.

The minister commended the Registrar and management of TRCN for their vision and commitment, saying the project places Nigerian teachers on the global stage by ensuring the country’s education system keeps pace with international best practices.

Ahmad urged stakeholders to continue supporting teachers, stressing that empowering them with modern tools and recognition is central to building a knowledge-driven economy and securing Nigeria’s future.

“This event is not just another ceremony or launch of a platform; it is a defining moment in our collective journey to reposition the Nigerian teaching profession for the demands of the 21st century,” she said.

According to the minister, the digital portal will ensure seamless registration and licensing of teachers nationwide; provide a transparent and credible database of qualified professionals; enable real-time access to professional development opportunities; and strengthen accountability while restoring dignity to the teaching profession.

She acknowledged that teachers had long struggled with cumbersome processes, but assured that the new portal would redefine the narrative, emphasising that the government sees, values, and supports teachers.

“Teaching in Nigeria will no longer be treated as a fallback option, but as a noble, respected, and digitally empowered profession,” the minister stated.

Stakeholders in the education sector are upbeat that the new platform will place Nigerian teachers on the global stage, aligning the education system with international best practices, while fostering innovation and efficiency.
