NDLEA mourns sudden passing of Cross River State commander

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the sudden death of its Cross River State ok Commander, Ogbonna Uzoma.

The news was communicated to the Agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), during a retreat for Heads of Agencies in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Commander Uzoma, recently appointed to lead the Cross River State Command, resumed duty on August 18, 2025. He had been temporarily residing in a hotel in Calabar while awaiting suitable accommodation.

According to a statement by NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Uzoma was scheduled to lead his officers in engagements at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

When officers did not hear from him by 9:00 am, hotel staff were asked to check on him. After several unanswered knocks and phone calls, an attendant accessed the room through the ceiling and found Commander Uzoma lifeless.

The state Police Command was promptly alerted, with the Commissioner of Police personally visiting the scene. An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, Babafemi said.

In support of the probe, Brig Gen Marwa has directed Assistant Comptroller General of Narcotics, Mathew Ewah, Zonal Commander of Zone 14 NDLEA, to relocate to Calabar.

Expressing condolences, Brig Gen Marwa said, “The Agency stands with the family in this trying moment and prays that God will comfort them and grant the departed eternal rest.”
