The Lagos State Police Command has taken into custody Samsideen Oladiti, a 55-year-old top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over allegations of murder and assault, the command confirmed on Saturday.
Babaseyi Oluseyi, deputy spokesperson for the police command, said in a statement on X that Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon,” was implicated in two violent incidents on Lagos Island.
The first involved the fatal assault of a man in August, while the second involved serious injuries inflicted on a dispatch rider on September 17.
“On 17th September 2025 at about 3:00pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury. The victim was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment,” Oluseyi said.
According to the police, Oladiti had previously assaulted another man on August 28, who later died from injuries sustained during the attack.
“During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy,” Oluseyi added.
The arrest followed a protest at Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse Market, where sympathizers of the deceased set two of his motorcycles ablaze. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, personally led officers to restore order, preventing further unrest.
Oluseyi confirmed that Oladiti was handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti-Yaba for further investigation.
The NURTW state chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, also known as Sego, distanced the union from Oladiti’s actions.
“The NURTW does not condone violence or any unlawful activity,” he said.
Adekunle urged law enforcement to conduct a thorough and impartial probe and assured that the union would impose internal disciplinary measures on Oladiti if found guilty.
“Once the legal process is complete, he will also face the union’s internal disciplinary procedures. Loyalty or closeness to me will not shield anyone from consequences,” he added.
Oluseyi appealed to Lagos residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure the public that justice will be diligently pursued in all the cases against the suspect,” she said.
