The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has emerged as the 10th National President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO).
Her election was announced on Friday at the association’s investiture and handover ceremony, where she succeeded Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, the immediate past president.
The media department of the UBTH, in a statement, said Prof. Ize-Iyamu thanked members of the association for their confidence in her leadership and pledged to advance the practice of orthodontics in Nigeria.
“I am deeply humbled and grateful to accept the esteemed position as the 10th President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists. I thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me to lead this noble profession,” she said.
She vowed to work with her executive to promote the interests of members, improve access to orthodontic services, and strengthen the association’s capacity to meet national oral health needs.
“Our association has a rich history of promoting excellence in orthodontic care, education, and research. As president, I commit to building on this legacy, fostering innovation, and exploring new frontiers in orthodontics.
“We will prioritize initiatives that enhance members’ skills, promote best practices, and improve patient care. Although we are just 74 orthodontists serving a population of over 237 million Nigerians, we will work to expand access to orthodontic care, especially in underserved areas,” she said.
She also pledged to lead with inclusivity, transparency, and accountability, urging members to share their expertise and collaborate in moving the profession forward.
In her remarks, the outgoing president, Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka, expressed confidence that Prof. Ize-Iyamu would build on the achievements of the association and take it to greater heights.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa, former Edo Deputy Governor Dr. Pius Odubu, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Dr. Fidelis Eki-Udoko (DCMAC, UBTH), Mrs. Joy Oyakhilome (Acting Director of Administration, UBTH), and Barr. Joshua Uwaila (PRO, UBTH), among others.
