A 20-year-old phone seller, Olusola Olumide, has narrated how he allegedly crushed a police sergeant to death during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos.

The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, at about 2:20 p.m., along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos State, when police officers on stop-and-search duty signalled a Lexus ES 350, with registration number FKJ 223 KX, driven by Olumide, to stop.

According to a police source, the driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The officer was reportedly knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to make the driver stop. The driver was eventually chased and arrested.

The sergeant sustained multiple fractures and head injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Olumide, while narrating his account of the incident, said the vehicle’s brake failed and that he accidentally ran over the officer.

He said: “My car brake failed and I accidentally ran over the officer. I was about to park, but there was a slip and I hit a car in front of me. He was in front, and I couldn’t stop the car. I have been using the vehicle for a month. I took the car to the mechanic to change the brake pad, and he told me that he had changed it. The next day, I went to buy fuel before I saw the officers. The police officers know me, and they know I didn’t do it deliberately. I regret hitting an officer of the law. I’m pained that he’s dead.”

The incident was among cases recorded by the Lagos State Police Command in September as part of its enforcement operations against armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms and other violent crimes.

The command said the operations resulted in the recovery of firearms, ammunition, stolen items and other incriminating exhibits.

According to the command, 43 vehicles and two vehicle keys, vandalised electrical wires, N2.5 million cash, five pump-action guns and five locally made pistols were recovered.

Other items included 20 live ammunition and cartridges, 15 expended ammunition, two cutlasses, assorted suspected criminal charms, a television set, a radiator, a car jack and a bag containing various vehicle spare parts and tools.

The command also said it had continued its enforcement against vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles.

It said an early-morning enforcement operation conducted on September 28 led to the impoundment of more than 41 vehicles over alleged violations involving covered number plates and non-registration.

Speaking while parading the exhibits, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said that on September 28, at about 4:00 p.m., police operatives on routine patrol along Oko Oba Road intercepted some suspected hoodlums who fled on sighting the officers.

Fatai said 32-year-old Ojo Azeez was arrested after a hot chase, adding that a search of him led to the recovery of a locally made cut-to-size pistol, a radiator, a jack, an engine block and a bag containing various vehicle spare parts and tools.

He said an investigation was ongoing to establish the source of the recovered items and determine the suspect’s involvement in other criminal activities.

Fatai also said that on September 26, at about 5:00 p.m., the command received information that some armed men, reportedly carrying an AK-47 rifle, had driven into Ghost and Spirit Lounge on Ekoro Road, Abule Egba, in a grey Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV and robbed a man of his gold wrist chain and rings.

According to him, the investigation led to the arrest of 29-year-old Ezekiel Sunday Obi on September 27 at the Toll Gate, Lagos-Ogun boundary.

He said efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the alleged gang and recover the exhibits.
