The announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize winners has officially commenced in Stockholm, Sweden, marking the start of this year’s Nobel Week — an annual event honouring individuals and organisations that have made remarkable contributions to humanity in science, literature, and peace.

The Nobel Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions, awarded each year by different committees based in Sweden and Norway. The awards were established in 1901 in line with the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who created dynamite and left his fortune to fund the prizes.

This year’s announcement began on Monday, October 6, 2025, with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, followed by the Physics Prize on Tuesday, October 7.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance — a finding that has deepened medical understanding of autoimmune diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Their research has helped explain how the body prevents the immune system from attacking itself.

The Nobel Prize in Physics went to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for demonstrating that quantum effects can exist in macroscopic electrical circuits — systems large enough to be seen and handled. Their work bridges the gap between quantum mechanics and practical technology, paving the way for more advanced quantum computers and sensors.

Each Nobel category comes with an 11 million Swedish kronor cash award (about $1.2 million) to be shared among the winners, along with a gold medal and diploma.

The announcements for the remaining prizes — Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences — are scheduled for later this week. The official Nobel Prize award ceremony will be held in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, while the Peace Prize will be presented in Oslo, Norway, as per Nobel’s instructions.

This year’s Nobel season continues the long tradition of celebrating human ingenuity, courage, and creativity across the world’s most influential fields.
