Olamide Ajala, rising diplomat, legal scholar, graduates top of UNILAG class

In a university renowned for producing legal giants, Olamide Ajala has distinguished herself not only through exceptional academic achievement but also as a trailblazer on the international stage. Ajala recently graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons.) in the top 5% of her highly competitive class of 300 students, capping a university career defined by both elite scholarship and a pioneering spirit in global advocacy.

Her academic prowess was consistently evident, earning her the Academic Excellence Award for Outstanding Students and the coveted award for Best Overall Student in Land Law. However, it was her work beyond the curriculum that signalled her future as a leader. As a board member of the prestigious Mooting Society, Ajala honed her skills in complex legal argumentation, a foundation that she would leverage to create a new legacy of international engagement for the university.

This passion for advocacy led her to become a key member of the pioneering set of students to represent the University of Lagos at the National Model United Nations (NMUN), the largest and most prestigious conference of its kind in the world. The NMUN, the world’s largest simulation of the United Nations, brings together over 5,000 students from 130 countries to deliberate on global issues in a professional diplomatic setting. Her participation in the conferences in New York and Washington, D.C. was a landmark achievement, establishing a pathway for subsequent groups of students to attend the global event. By being among the first to undertake this ambitious initiative, Ajala was instrumental in building a tradition of international diplomacy within the law faculty.

Her dual role as a delegate and as a leader within the Mooting Society positioned her as a natural mentor to her peers. Colleagues noted her unique ability to merge rigorous legal analysis with persuasive policy advocacy—a skill that impressed conference adjudicators and set a high standard of performance for all future UNILAG delegations.

The journey was a testament to the team’s resolve. “This was the culmination of many months of intense effort. The twelve of us spent countless hours researching global issues, mastering parliamentary procedure, and fundraising to make this historic trip possible,” Ajala explained. “To stand in those halls and represent Nigeria was an incredible honour, and we were driven by the conviction that UNILAG deserved a voice in these critical global conversations.”

By successfully navigating significant logistical and financial hurdles, the delegation showcased the academic prowess of the UNILAG Faculty of Law to an audience of hundreds of universities from around the world. Olamide Ajala’s success as both a top-tier scholar and a diplomatic pioneer marks her as a uniquely versatile and promising new force in the global legal community, laying the foundation for her future work in international human rights and gender justice.
