ASUU strike grounds academic activities at UI

Academic activities at the University of Ibadan were completely paralysed on Monday as the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) joined the nationwide warning strike declared by the union.

Lecture halls were empty, administrative offices locked, and the usual movement of students and vehicles within the campus was significantly reduced, indicating total compliance with the industrial action.

The strike, which began at midnight on Sunday, October 13, halted all teaching and related academic duties. Most students remained in their hostels and off-campus residences, having been informed in advance about the work stoppage.

Confirming the development, Chairman of the ASUU-UI chapter, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, told The Guardian that the university’s branch was fully complying with the directive of the national leadership.

“The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” Afolabi said.

He added that a monitoring team had been deployed across faculties and departments to ensure total compliance with the directive.

“There is no academic or related activity taking place on campus at the moment. Our members are fully in line with the directive, and we are actively monitoring the situation,” he stated.
