Nigerian singer Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, popularly known as Patoranking, has dropped a new single titled No Jonze, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect from his forthcoming fifth studio album.
The track takes listeners back to the streets of Ajegunle — the birthplace of Galala — blending the raw energy of late 1990s and early 2000s street sounds with modern Afro-dancehall vibes.
The song celebrates hard work, focus, and determination, turning Lagos slang “No Jonze” into a motivational anthem about staying sharp and seizing every opportunity.
Known for fusing reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeats, Patoranking describes Galala as the “stepchild of dancehall” and credits it as one of his earliest influences. In No Jonze, he pays homage to that sound while connecting it to global rhythms like the Dominican Republic’s dembow, Uganda’s kidandali, and Kenya’s gengetone.
The accompanying music video, directed by Nigerian filmmaker Director K, was shot in Ajegunle, famously called “the Kingston of Nigeria.” It features cameos from Galala pioneers such as Marvelous Benjy and Allen B, and includes a mural honouring legends like Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Oritse Femi, Baba Fryo, African China, and Danfo Drivers.
The video captures the spirit of 1990s Lagos while adding a modern touch. Through No Jonze, Patoranking not only celebrates his musical roots but also reaffirms the power of resilience and authenticity in the ever-evolving Afrobeats scene.
His upcoming album is expected to dig deeper into his origins and spotlight the connection between local African sounds and global music trends.
